I will divide my answer into two parts: one on stock investing and the other on stock trading.
Watch this video for a complete explanation.
Stock Market Investing
According to many scholars, stock market investing is halal under certain conditions:
- The company’s business must be halal according to Islamic rules. Investing in companies involved in interest-based activities (such as banks and finance companies), alcohol, hotels with revenue from bars and casinos, gambling, pork products, entertainment, etc., is prohibited.
- When you receive dividends from a company, you must calculate the portion of profit generated through interest activities, remove that percentage from your dividend income, and give it to those in need. This practice is known as interest income purging.
- You cannot sell the shares you buy until they are delivered to your demat account, which in the Indian market happens in T+2 days.
- You can also invest in Shari'ah-compliant mutual funds like Tata Ethical Fund, Taurus Ethical Fund, and Reliance Nippon Shari'ah Bees fund, all of which are certified by TASIS.
If you have market knowledge, you can directly invest in debt-free companies that are Shari'ah-compliant.
Stock Trading
Stock trading, generally done through day trading or short-term trades, has different considerations:
- Shorting stocks or futures is not allowed because it involves selling stocks you do not own.
- Day trading, options, and futures trading are not permissible according to many scholars due to the high level of speculation involved.
I personally invest in Shari'ah-compliant companies for the medium to long term and avoid speculative day trading, options, and futures. This approach is the best way to grow your money in a halal manner. Day trading is not suitable for everyone, with 90% of day traders losing money due to its highly speculative nature.
